Dr Greger LIVE at Algonquin Commons Theatre – SUCCESS!

Wow that was fun!

Thank you so much to everyone who came out on Monday evening (especially our members who helped make this a possibility). There are 700 seats at Algonquin Commons Theatre (ACT) and you filled them right up.

We’d also like to thank the staff at ACT. They were all perfectly helpful throughout the process. We can recommend the venue without hesitation to anyone looking to book a spot that size.

And of course last but not least, a galactic thank you to the incredible Dr Greger who somehow manages to entertain like a stand up comedian and educate like a master despite travelling non stop from city to city on his How Not To Diet speaking tour. He was in Toronto the day before and in Winnipeg today!

Before he headed out the door he made sure everyone in line got their books signed and pictures taken.

As much as we loved Dr Greger and NutritionFacts.org before, we love and respect him even more now. We hope everyone had as much of an inspiring and entertaining evening as we did.

And don’t forget to check out Dr Greger’s newest best selling book How Not to Diet. https://nutritionfacts.org/how-not-to-diet/…

2020 VegOttawa Association 10TH ANNUAL AGM

VegOttawa Associaton will be holding its tenth Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday, February 6, 2020 at 6:30pm at The Copper Branch in Barrhaven (3161 Strandherd Dr #301, Nepean, ON K2J 5N1).  We will review the achievements we’ve made since the last AGM and look towards the future of VegOttawa.

As per our bylaws, there will be an election for 5 board of director positions.  Director positions have a one-year term.  Nominations are currently being accepted. Nominations must be received by Wednesday, January 29. Only VegOttawa members in good standing may be nominated or make a nomination. You can nominate yourself or someone else. Nominations must be made in writing and be signed by the nominee.  Nominations can be e-mailed to secretary.vegottawa@gmail.com.

VegOttawa members will have an opportunity to appoint an auditor at the meeting. The auditor will audit the accounts of the Association. The term of the auditor runs until the following annual meeting. Remuneration will be set by the board. You can make suggestions and discuss with members in our Facebook members only group.

All members in good standing are entitled to attend the AGM. In order to vote in the election, you must have been a member at the time this meeting was announced. If you are uncertain as to your eligibility, please email our membership coordinator at memberships.vegottawa@gmail.com.

You may still become a member between now and February 6, and be able to attend the AGM.  Purchase your VegOttawa membership here.

It would be very helpful if you RSVP’d your attendance to secretary.vegottawa@gmail.com, or if you are on Facebook then just mark yourself as ‘going’, as we need a certain number of attendees to make quorum.

Also, all attending members will receive 10% off their meal purchases! Please arrive early if you plan on eating there. Thank you Copper Branch!

Thank you for supporting VegOttawa’s efforts in making Ottawa a more veg-friendly place.

Moving Towards a Vegan Option in Canada

By Carolyn Harris

Hello everyone!

I wanted to give you all a quick update. You may remember two of my previous blog posts, letting you know about a petition calling on the Canadian government “to require public canteens under federal jurisdiction to provide a vegan option, and to raise this issue and work with provincial and territorial counterparts to require the same at all levels of government.” In practice, this means that a vegan option would be required to be served in all public schools, hospitals, prisons, and other public institutions. This is an important step that our country can take towards animal rights and vegan rights. A similar law is already in place in Portugal.

I didn’t start the petition, but I signed it and mentioned it on my blogs because this issue matters a lot to me.

In total, the petition received 3106 signatures from the public, and it was presented to the House of Commons on February 7, 2018. The government’s response was disappointing—basically, they implied that they don’t plan on taking action on this issue.

Fortunately, however, the dedicated vegan advocates who are working on this issue are not giving up! A new organization, Vegan Option Canada, has been founded to advocate for this new law. Vegan Option Canada is currently running two versions of their petition: an official paper petition and an unofficial, supplementary online petition. You can sign both, as the signatures for each petition are counted separately. You can access the online petition directly by clicking here. Check out Vegan Option Canada’s website to learn more about this issue and to find a paper petition near you. Alternatively, you can order sheets of the paper petition so that you can collect signatures yourself!

I feel quite confident that this initiative can succeed. Let’s work together and make it happen!
